"Shinzan Masanao" - Phenomenally Carved Wooden Netsuke, Figure of the Mouse Catcher, Marked "Shinzan" - Japan, Ise Province Area, Beginning of 20th century
Japanese netsuke made in phenomenal artisanal hand carving by the famous artist and last scion to the renowned Masanao family, "Shinzan Masanao". The netsuke depicts the mice catcher, his oversized body wearing only pants with him seated in an amusing pose, holding a club in one hand and a wooden trap in his other hand, aiming to accomplish the impossible and catch the fleeting mouse carried on his back, the mouse's eyelids are set with an inlay of carved black horn and are visible beneath its squeezed hairy eyebrows, Japan, Ise - Yamada Province.
Very fine style and carving techinque, typical of the artist, marked "Shinzan" on its pants.
Dimensions: height: 3.2 cm, length: 3.4 cm.
