JAPANESE EDO WOODBLOCK KABUKI ACTORS BY HIRONOBU UTAGAWA
Color woodblock on paper by Hironobu Utagawa, a Japanese ukiyo-e artist active ca. 1851 to 1872. Late Edo era, ca. 1860s. The print depicts two kabuki actors as the characters of the Kayoi Kuruwa play. Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese theatre, mixing dramatic performance with traditional dance that originated during the early Edo period.
