FRENCH HARLEQUIN GUITAR ETCHING BY ANDRE DERAIN
Andre Derain, French, 1880 to 1954, color etching on paper, Harlequin on Guitar, after the original oil painting. Signed in the print, lower right. Numbered 149 of 300 in pencil, lower left. framed. Derain has painted a life size Harlequin, a character from the Italian Commedia dellarte, characterised by his colourful chequered costume and bicorn hat. The Spanish painter Salvado, who worked for Derain and Pablo Picasso posed for the character. Andre Derain was a French artist, painter, sculptor and co founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse.
