ANTIQUE 18 C RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF ST MATTHEW
An antique late 18th-century Russian Orthodox icon representing Saint Apostle and Evangelist Matthew. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with raised kovcheg borders. Matthew the Apostle (Saint Matthew) is named in the New Testament as one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. According to Christian traditions, he was also one of the four Evangelists as author of the Gospel of Matthew, and thus is also known as Matthew the Evangelist.
