ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON MOTHER OF GOD UNEXPECTED JOY
An antique 19th century Russian Orthodox icon representing the Mother of God of Unexpected joy. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board, gilt accents. The piece depicts a room with an icon of Virgin Mary with Jesus Child, and beneath it a youth is kneeling at prayer. The text of his prayer is in the lower left. Saint Theodorus and Saint Maria flank the scene. Titled in Church Slavonic above. The iconography of the image arose under the influence of the story described by Dimitry of Rostov in his work Irrigated Fleece, 1683. The title refers to the feeling of relief which a sinner feels after prayer and confession. Wooden frame. Religious Christian Collectibles, Russian Icons.
Dimensions: Overall size: Frame 17 1/2 x 15 /4 in. Image 14 x 12 in. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: Overall good vintage condition. Refer to photos. Sold As Is.
