Western Zhou Dynasty, Ca. 1050-771 BC An intricate Chinese Western Zhou Dynasty bronze ding ritual cauldron adorned with a wealth of ornamentation. This vessel stands on three legs with taoite heads that support a compressed round-bodied bowl. The ding is surmounted by two bail handles that rise from the rim. Decoration under the rim includes an elaborate band of dragons, with backward-turned heads, slender bodies, coiled tails and strong claws. By the Late Western Zhou period, sets of ding and gui were used to indicate rank. For similar see: The Palace Museum, 00010032. Restored. Size: 225mm x 210mm; Weight: 2.01kg Provenance: East Anglian private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
