LARGE DAUNIAN KRATER WITH GEOMETRIC MOTIFS
Ca. 500 - 400 BC A Daunian krater with two handles modeled to resemble upraised hands, and two tab-shaped handles. The krater is adorned with geometric and vegetal decorations in black hues, including an elegant olive branch with leaves in the middle part of the krater. As early as the 6th century BC, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region, as evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centres of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia. Daunian pottery is characterised by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones, as we see in this intriguing example. For similar see: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 1970.11.11. Size: 280mm x 265mm; Weight: 2.78kg Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s
