Ascalon (ASHKELON) mint, Autonomous city coin Issue, 64/3 BC. AR tetradrachm. Silver Tetradrachm (AR) coin. Weight 13.66 gram, Size 25 mm.
Descriptions of the type :
Head right. / Eagle standing left, palm brunch over the shoulder, Dove from left - Ascalon symbols, Greek legend : "ΙΕΡΑΣ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ ΑΣΚΑΛΩΝΙΤΩΝ" (Sacred and Inviolate of (the people of) Askalon), L MA (date). Dated Year 41 Era of Ascalon (64/3 BC).
The coin is related to the time of Ptolemy XII, who in 63 BC sent auxiliary forces to Pompey the Great to conquer the besieged Jerusalem.
