Larry Donnelly joined the RAF in 1937 nurturing an ambition to become a pilot. He initially trained as a wireless operator and air gunner and was flying in that capacity when war broke out in 1939. He survived many operational tours between 1939 and 1943, during which time he was awarded the DFM. he was eventually selected for pilot training in 1943 and achieved his coveted wings .
