Vira B McIlrath Scheibner (1889 - 1956) Oil on canvasboard, Signed Lower Left, Measures (11.5 x 10 inches) w/frame (13 x 11.5 inches) Originally from New Hope, Pennsylvania and Lambertville, New Jersey, the artist was born with the name Vira B. McIlrath. She married a Mr. Scheibner in 1921, and the couple lived in St. Augustine, Florida, from 1921 until her death in 1956. She studied at the Cleveland School of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and art teachers included Robert Spencer, John F. Carlson and Charles Rosen. She exhibited at the National Association of Women Artists from 1927 (prize) through 1932. She was also a regular exhibitor at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1925 through 1932. Her stylistic roots are in the New Hope School, and some of her best Florida works reflect the impressionistic brushwork and color palette of Fern Coppedge.
