Vintage Framed 9 Patch Quilt - Mary Schafer
Vintage Framed 9 Patch Quilt measuring 87x93". This quilt is from the Mary Schafer Collection. She was the quilter and collector from the book Mary Schafer - American Quilt Maker by Gwen Marston. It is comprised of 25 framed 9 patch blocks, 9.5x9.5", set on point and staggered, 4 by 4, with 3.5" sashing with shirting fabric. And partial blocks as setting triangles. I believe this portion to be c1890s. The inner brown print border and outer pink print border, quilting and binding were completed later in 1986. MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER pg 140: “In 1986, Mary finished an antique top from the Harriman estate, Framed Nine Patch.” Photo on pg 139. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. There is thin cotton batting and a white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with applied white binding, by hand. There is a sleeve applied to the back top edge for hanging, with pencil notes. It is in good condition with light green staining on right back. Slight soiling along left edge on back. This quilt has been professionally appraised and reflected in our estimate.
