A FINE BRONZE CIGAR HOLDER AS A MOORISH MAN WITH BASKET, 19 C.
This is a 19th-century bronze figural cigar or possibly a pipe holder, modeled as a barefoot porter or laborer carrying a woven basket on his back. The figure is highly detailed, showing muscular tension and realistic posture, suggesting he is under strain from the weight. The basket has an open top, which would have served a utilitarian function, likely holding matches, pipes, or small items.
The craftsmanship reflects Orientalist or colonial-era European decorative art, which often portrayed exoticized figures from Africa or the Caribbean. The bare feet, stylized curly hair, and exaggerated burden emphasize the "noble laborer" trope common in decorative art from imperialist powers.
