A RUSSIAN/SOVIET FEMALE DANCER BRONZE BY A. ZERTLIN, 1918

The signature on the base is signed by "A. Zertlin" and dated 1918. A. Zertlin (Abram Moiseevich Zertlin, Russian: Абра́м Моисе́евич Зертлин) was а Soviet-Jewish sculptor active in the early 20th century.

While not widely documented in Western art historical circles, Zertlin was part of the broader Russian sculptural movement around the Russian Revolution and the early Soviet period. His works often focused on expressive human forms, and this dynamic Art Nouveau/early modernist style fits well with Russian sculpture just before or around the revolutionary era.

This sculpture was created in 1918, just after the Russian Revolution, a turbulent and transformative period for Russian artists. A blend of Art Nouveau and symbolist influences, emphasizing motion, emotion, and the human form. A female dancer or muse, captured mid-movement, reminiscent of spiritual or liberated themes.

Provenance: The Collection of William Cervera (5/31/51 - 3/15/22).
