ROUGET DE LISLE CLAUDE JOSEPH: (1760-1836) French military officer during the French Revolutionary Wars, author of the words and music for the French national anthem La Marseillaise. A.L.S., Rouget de Lisle, one page, 4to, Paris, 3rd June 1825, to Monsieur Juillerat, in French. Rouget de Lisle writes concerning some confusion over the delivery of a book and states, in part, ‘Mlle. Juillerat kindly changed her mind from informing you that Amaury Duval had promised to send you immediately the copy of the Russian fables which you have the right to claim and the sending of which had only been delayed by mistake or by forgetfulness. It turns out that either one or the other didn’t happen. I learned yesterday from Alexandre Duval that the copy in question had been given to him by his brother, from the moment of its publication, that he had not been able to send it to you, being ignorant of your address, but that he was at your disposal’), further adding that Juillerat could collect the book himself from Duval’s home at Rue de Rohan. Rouget de Lisle also offers to collect and deliver the book himself, ‘Veuillez me le mander et je me ferai un plaisir de vous epargner ce petit embarras, d'autant plus que l'occasion de vous le transmettre me procurera celle de l'hommage des sentiments d'estime et des considerations qu'un ami commun et la voix publique m'ont depuis longtemps inspires pour vous’ (Translation: ‘Please let me know and I will be happy to spare you this little embarrassment, especially since the opportunity to send it to you will give me that of the homage of feelings of esteem and consideration that a common friend and the public voice have long inspired me for you’). With integral address leaf in Rouget de Lisle’s hand (small area of paper loss to one edge, caused by the original breaking of the seal). Some light, minimal age wear to the edges and a few very minor traces of former mounting to the corners of the verso, about VG
