Koto WW2 Samurai Officer Katana Nihonto Shin Gunto
Brought back from WW2, this nice Koto (ca. 1500s) blade has been remounted in modern samurai mountings. The blade is in excellent condition with a length of 28.75 inches (73 cm). The blade features a well-made itame hada. The hamon is a Bizen-style gunome midare that is present the length of the blade ending in a midare boshi. The tang is mumei, or unsigned, and ubu, or unshortened. Based on the length and shape, the sword looks to date to ca.1500s (Muromachi or Momoyama period) and is likely from the Sue-Bizen school. That school was famous for supplying many swords during the Sengoku period of warring states. The mountings (koshirae) are modern and in excellent condition. The tsuka is leather cord-wrapped with modern menuki. The tsuba is iron and modern. The saya is wood-lacquered black with a rayskin portion. Habaki has been repaired and tsuba is loose. Circa 1550-1600. Full sword measures 40.5 inches.
