Shulchan Aruch with Sma Commentary – Berlin, 1717 – Hundreds of Glosses
Shulchan Aruch, with Me'irat Einayim commentary [Sma] by Rabbi Yehoshua Falk HaCohen. Berlin, [1717].
Hundreds of long glosses in ancient Ashkenasi writing [1700s], unidentified writer. This is comparable to a whole work of glosses, primarily dealing with examining the origin of the law of Talmud treatises and opinions of the leading Rishonim, with discussions on the Mechaber's decisions in the Shulchan Aruch and the Beit Yosef. The glosses portray the genius and breadth of knowledge of the writer. Several glosses by another writer.
On Leaf 57/2 are two glosses on the counting of the Shemita years: "And now this year 1763 is shemita…", "And now in our times, this year 1884 is shemita and will be quickly in our times 1891… I have written here in Eisgrub…" [Eisgrub is a village near Nikolsburg. The Maharam Bennet lived there when he gave the approbation to Ben Yemini printed in Vienna in 1824].
Ownership inscriptions on the cover leaves including an inscription that the book belongs to "The important woman Ms. Sarel… signed below Avraham… who studies here in the shadow of Rabbi the Great Gaon… my Teacher Chaim Zvi Manheimer Rabbi of Verba…".
3-28, 33-160, 166-180, [1], 288-320, 18 leaves. (Lacking: title page and the next two leaves, Leaves 29-32, 161-165). Mistaken page numbering of Leaves 280-288. 30 cm. Fair-good condition. Stains and wear, moisture damage and mildew tr
