SCHEDEL, HARTMANN
Templum Salomonis (Solomon’s Temple).
Half-page woodcut by Michael Wohlgemuth from the Nuremberg Chronicle. Depiction of Perugia, Italy on verso.
13.5 x 12.5 inches (35 x 32 cm).
Nuremberg, first edition 1493:
Beneath the depiction of the temple are nine Biblical figures including Kings Jerobam, Nadav, Baasha and Bela. Evidently, the irony of depicting Israelite kings bearing royal orbs with crosses was lost on the artist.
