Six days following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln New York Governor Reuben Fenton declared this day to be one devoted to “humiliation and prayer,” hence, as reported here by the New York Herald, appropriate services were conducted in New York’s various Houses of Worship. Columns 5-6 of the present front-page reports from New York’s synagogues, detailing the sermons and services that mourned the death of President Lincoln. Provides detailed accounts of affairs conducted at “B'nai Israel, Bikur Cholim U-Kadisha and Shaari Zedek” in which each synagogue was draped in black.
