1979 Russian Arktikugol Scrip 1 kopeck P# Grades Gem CU. On May 7, 1935, the Soviet Union signed the Svalbard Treaty, which allowed the installation of a Soviet mining company in the Svalbard Islands north of Norway and inside the Arctic Circle. This company, called Arktikugol, issued a series of coins and banknotes for the exclusive use of the inhabitants of the island of Soviet nationality. It is sometimes considered the "Northernmost Currency".
