Robert Mapplethorpe (November 4, 1946 - March 9, 1989) was an American photographer, known for his controversial and provocative work that often explored themes of sexuality, race, and gender. He was born in Floral Park, New York. Mapplethorpe gained widespread recognition in the 1970s and 1980s for his black-and-white photographs, which included portraits, self-portraits, and still lifes. His work often featured explicit homoerotic and BDSM imagery, which sparked significant controversy and debates about the boundaries of art, obscenity, and censorship.
