Basic Book: Tractates Menachot and Bechorot of the Bavli Talmud - Frankfurt am Main, 1720

"This edition surpasses in its value, additions and glosses, all previous editions and on it, following editions were based" (Raphael rabinowitz - an article on the printing of the Talmud, p. 98).

Volume of the Bavli Talmud with tractates Menachot and Bechorot. Printed by the partners Shmuel Marcus and Raphael de Palacios - Frankfurt am Main, 1720. 115, 63 leaves. Separate title page for each tractate. Stefansky Sufrei Yesod 42. See below.

The virtue of the edition!

This ediiton is one of the three important editions of the Talmud: Bomberg, Frankfurt and the Rom Widow and Brothers in Vilna. This edition was based on the glosses of the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Shmuel of Krakow and included thousands of references and more. The Dikdukei Sofrim described this edition: This edition surpasses in its value, additions and glosses, all previous editions and on it, following editions were based...".

On the title page, the printer expresses his gratitude to the printer Yissachar Berman of Halberstadt, who printed the Bavli Talmud in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1697, for giving him permission to reprint the edition of the Shas despite the rabbinic ban on its printing. The printer began printing the Shas in 1717 in Amsterdam and then continued in Frankfurt am Main. After printing the entire Shas, the printer reprinted in Frankfurt the first tractates that were printed in Amsterdam.
