Painter, art historian, teacher, philologist, poet.
He was born in 1838 in Sveaborg (now the administrative center). Helsinki area). A pupil of the Arakcheevsky cadet corps in Novgorod. 1852-1858 – studied in the 2nd Peterhof Cadet Corps. 1858-1861 – studied at the Faculty of Philology of St. Petersburg University. From 1861 he took part in exhibitions. Since 1861, he has been a volunteer at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1862, he was transferred to the number of students of the Academy of Arts. In 1864, he successfully completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was awarded the title of class artist of the 3rd degree. In 1864-1865 he was a member of the Art Group headed by V. M. Maksimov. 1865-1876 – served in the Land Bank in Kharkov, did little painting. Since 1876 – member and exhibitor of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. 1877-1895 – lived in Moscow. In the 1880s, he visited Germany, France, and Italy. In 1890 he was awarded the title of academician. In the 1890s, he was in charge of the Fine Arts Department of the Artist magazine. Since 1893 he has been a full member of the Academy of Arts. Since 1895 he lived and worked in St. Petersburg. From 1895 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts.
