In that generation a halakhic controversy arose among the great rabbis in all corners of the world over the get which was done by Rabbi Yisrael Lifshitz Rabba of Kaliva.

The sentence was about a groom who got a divorce to his wife while his sanity was in doubt.

There was concern that at the time of the divorce he was in a state of mind defined as a 'fool' and his divorce was not valid according to Halacha. The halakhic controversy dealt with the question of what is a person defined as "sane" for the purpose of granting a divorce, since an insane person can not give a Divorce document, but it went beyond the limited halakhic debate, ignited extensive controversy between rabbis and various communities, and important rabbis of the generation intervened. In the book before us, answers were given by the great men of the same generation about the laws of divorce, among them the geniuses Rabbi Yaakov Emdin, The Noda B'yehudah, the sha'agat arie, Rabbi Shaul of Amsterdam and more. The answers given in it served as a cornerstone for rulings in Gittin matters in the centuries that followed.
