Currier & Ives "Trotting Gelding Billy D" Print
James J. McAuliffe (American, 1848-1921) for Currier and Ives, United States. Color lithograph titled "The Trotting Gelding Billy D. with Running Mate, " and subtitled "Owned by J.B. Barnaby. Driven by John Murphy. Beacon Park, Boston, Oct. 22, 1881. Record 2:14 1/4. Driven by Thomas S. Foster." This print depicts a team of racing horses as they fly past an audience, 1881. Signed in plate along the lower right.

Currier and Ives was founded by Nathaniel Currier (American, 1813-1888) in 1835 as "the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints, " but changed its name with the addition of James Merritt Ives (American, 1824-1895) in 1857. The company created over 7000 popular lithographs depicting American life until 1907.
