Mid-19th c. Japanese Orihon Accordion Print Book
Japanese "orihon" accordion book with prints, drawings, and watercolor paintings, mid- to late 19th century. The pages resemble inshu washi paper, which is a durable hand-beaten paper that is typically made of mulberry pulp, imparting a unique and dense texture that is optimal for painting or drawing. With silk covers depicting foliate and scrollwork motifs.
Height: 9 1/2 in x width: 7 in x depth: 3/4 in.
Condition: All pages are present and have been accounted for; however, there is one print missing from the second to last page. The colors of the woodblock prints are bold and bright. The sheets are toned, especially along the extreme edges. There is a speckled appearance to all of the sheets within the book; however, this is likely original to the artistic process and the the type of paper used in the production of the book. Some shattering to the edges of the green silk covers. Wear including some chips and small losses along the edges of the front and back covers of the book.
