Mary Lee Abbott (American, 1921-2019). Abstract expressionist watercolor painting in blue and yellow. Pencil signed along the lower right.

Provenance: Estate of Mary Abbott.

Mary Abbott was an influential American abstract expressionist painter known for her vibrant and dynamic works. Born in New York City, Abbott was deeply embedded in the art scene of the mid-20th century, a period marked by a flourishing of abstract expressionism. She was notably associated with a pioneering group of women artists who played critical roles in shaping this movement including: Jay DeFeo, Helen Frankenthaler, Sonia Gechtoff, Judith Godwin, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Deborah Remington, and Ethel Schwabacher.

Abbott's style is characterized by bold color, energetic brushwork, and a sense of spontaneity that captures the essence of abstract expressionism. Her work reflects a deep engagement with the emotional and psychological aspects of abstraction, often exploring themes of movement and fluidity.
