Large William A. Slaughter Landscape Painting
William A. Slaughter (American, 1923-2003). Large oil on canvas painting depicting a country road. Signed along the lower right.
Lot Essay:
William A. Slaughter's professional life began with his call to the ministry. After serving in the Air Force in WWII, he was ordained as Lutheran pastor serving in Texas. He began painting after serving a ministry in Mexico, and his artworks quickly gained popularity with his parishioners. Slaughter began displaying locally after moving to Dallas where he exhibited with the Artists and Craftsmen's Association of Dallas.
He was mostly self-taught and inspired by the landscapes of Texas. His work also extended to wildlife, women and children, and still lives. In 1973, two years after leaving the ministry to pursue painting full-time, he was awarded his first prize. Since then until his death, he exhibited in all fifty states and at least sixteen countries. Though he left the ministry in the 70s, he still maintained ties to the church. One of his most cherished achievements was designing the stained glass windows for The King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas.
