LIBBY PRISON PRINSONER’S LETTER, LATER K.I.A. AT ATLANTA
Good content letter with transmittal envelope from Union Union 2nd Lt. Charles R. Pomeroy, Co. I, 33rd Ohio Infantry, 2pp. 8vo., 'Libby Prison Rich'd Va.', Nov.6, 1863 to his father in Pomeroy, Ohio. According to a news clipping (copy included), Pomeroy had been captured at Chickamauga when he returned to the battlefield to recover a wounded officer and was captured. Mistaken to be a surgeon, he spent several months at Libby Prison before being exchanged. He writes, in part: '…I cannot tell you how glad I was when I received Sallie's letyter…I am very well indeed. You have not received my letters…Please have my baggage sent home…Put anything in my box that you think I would like to have in the way of eating. A (pillow cover). Send in box reading matter for we have very little of it. The Sanitary Commission has sent us some clothing & a little reading matter. It is very dark where I am writing unto you. Oblige for the stamps & envelopes. Love to all…' Pomeroy signs at conclusion, and again on verso. The adversity paper envelope present bearts a Confederate 'Old Point Comfort Va" cancel and a 'Due 6' stamp. Two pieces. Pomeroy would return to the 33rd Ohio and be promoted to First Lieutenant. He would be killed by artillery shrapnel before Atlanta on August 11, 1864.
