UNION SAILOR’S TARRED HAT, TINTYPE, AND SAILOR’S PALM
Rarely encountered trio of items from a single Union sailor. Included in the lot is a 14 x 12.25 tarred woven straw hat as issued to Union sailors, complete with leather sweatband (partially detached). The front of the brim of the hat is only the very slightest bit loosened in the weave – this no doubt caused by the sailor pulling down on the cap as a form of salute to officers. The hat is accompanied by a 2.25 x 3.25 tintype of the sailor seated and in uniform, likely wearing this very hat, set into half of a gutta percha case. Finally, there is a very well-used 'sailor's palm', a leather palm guard used by the sailor to hold needles and protect the palm when repairing torn sails. All three items purchased in a single New England estate.
