ADAM PHILIPPE, COMTE DE CUSTINE
(1740 – 1793) French general, served in the American Revolutionary War joining Rochambeau's Expedition Particuliere (Special Expedition) supporting the American colonists. Following the successful Virginia campaign and the Battle of Yorktown, he returned to France and rejoined his unit in the Royal Army. His failure commanding the Army of the North led to his trial and summary execution by guillotine. Manuscript L.S. 'Custine' as commander of the Army of the Rhine, [n.p.], 1792, in French, apparently an order that certain payments be made. Fine.
