Two Torah pointers. Jerusalem, Yemenite-Jewish Community, [first half of 20th century].
Silver, cast and engraved.
Two Torah pointers of a basic form generally characteristic of pointers from Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria.
1. Upper segment of handle spiraling, surmounted by suspension ring, and lower segment flat – wide at top and tapering toward wrist. Clenched hand with long, gently flexed index finger and cuffed wrist. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "Toward the elevation of the soul […] Sa'id [or Sa'adah?] son of Suleiman Ma'uda Achlufi and… toward the elevation of the soul of his son, Yihya Charfi […]." Length: 30 cm.
2. Upper segment of handle spiraling, then square. Lower segment flat, wide at first and then narrowing toward wrist. Clenched hand with long, gently flexed index finger and cuffed wrist. Engraved Hebrew biblical verse and dedicatory inscription: "As for G-d, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried" [Psalms 18:31]. "Acquired with the funds of… David Kapach". Length: 25.5 cm.
