Roman Imperial oil lamp.
Light clay; geometric motifs on the shoulder dolphin on the the discus; short nozzle and a round body. Cf: Israeli, Y., & Avida, U. (1988). Oil-Lamps from Eretz Israel: The Louis and Carmen Warschaw Collection at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, P. 32, no. 41. 8 x 7.5 cm. Small area of restoration on discus.
The Early Roman period (1th century B.C- 1th century A.D), after the conquer of Israel by Pompeius in 63 B.C, was the time were a new type of oil lamps emerged in Eretz Israel. These lamps were the product of a new fashion in the manufacture of oil lamps, and bear distinguishable motifs from the Roman traditional art. These lamps served as a model for imitation in local workshops by Jews that adopted general style, while rejecting their figurine.
