Terracotta oil lamp with seven nozzles and handle.
Decorated with a circle of dots and linear borders around the filling hole, and a similar dot in front of each nozzle.. The style of the nozzles is vaguely similar to the spatulated nozzle familiar to us from "Herodian" oil lamps. The fabric suggests the lamp comes from Palmyra. The dotted decoration with linear borders makes it a certainty. One nozzle is repaired, otherwise the condition is good. 12 X 12 cm. Cf: Kaufman, J. Haneroth Halalou, p.250, no. 906/7 for lamps from Palmyra with dotted decoration.
The Early Roman Period or the Herodian Period, (1st cent. B.C.E.-C.E.)
Ex-Eugene and Monica Hollander collection. Inscribed in black ink, “M. Dayan.”
