Moshe Sternschuss Works on Paper Accompained by erotic love poems 2001

Selected and edited by Ruth Zarfati

Moshe Strenshus, born in 1903, was a sculptor and sculptor.

In 1926 Sternschuss realized his dream when he immigrated to Israel and began his studies at Bezalel.

Between 1930 and 1934 he completed his studies at the École Nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Sternschuss focused on sculpture, plastic anatomy and architecture. He graduated with honors and was chosen to exhibit in the Salon d'Autumn and the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.

Sternschuss participated regularly in group exhibitions of the Israel Painters and Sculptors Association and in 1947 joined the "New Horizons" group and began to present with the group the avant-garde art of pure abstraction. Despite his belonging to the group, Sternschuss did not move to absolute abstraction and maintained a strong connection to reality. His subjects dealt mainly with the human body, the animal world, the images of mother and child, and the stories of the Bible.

Sternschuss was one of the founders of the Avni Institute and managed the sculpture department. He was one of the first abstract sculptors in Israel and his works are integrated into buildings and complexes throughout the country.

Sternschuss won twice the Tel Aviv Municipality's Dizengoff Prize and in 2001 a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

He passed away in 1992 in Tel Aviv.

Gideon Ofrat wrote in his article on Sternschuss, "Since few of his public sculptures are known, Sternschuss is known mainly as a sculpture teacher at the Avni Institute for decades ... As a sculptor, although he won twice the Dizengoff Prize (1954, 1956) All though he should be regarded as one of the great fathers of abstract sculpture in the country ... Sternschuss looks at generations of sculptors, many of them his students, who burst into the stage of art and his spotlight while he doubtfully enjoys the shadows, a doubt that complements them.
