Anti-Semitic Propaganda Notes – Paris, Late 19th Century – the Dreyfus Affair
Five anti-Semitic propaganda notes that were distributed in France during the Dreyfus Affair. [France, late 19th century]. French.
1-2. Two identical notes with the caption "A bas les Juifs" [Begone Jews].
Approx. 3.5x10 cm. Good-fair condition. Tears and open tears along edges.
3-5. Three identical notes with the caption "Vive Dérouléde" [Long live Dérouléde].
Paul Déroulède (1864-1914) was the founder and president of the French national movement "Ligue des patriots" (The League of Patriots). During the late 1890s, he was chosen as a representative of the French parliament. The movement he headed was inclined to ultra-nationalism, violence and anti-Semitism. During the Dreyfus Affair, Déroulède supported the position of the army and demanded that Alfred Dreyfus be accused of treason.
