Chiddushei Rabbi Moshe Ber Shehn, Av Beit Din of Vieden (Vienna). Two Volumes

"... Great in Torah and pure reverence and spectacular wisdom ..." (From the words of the Mahar"i Assad)

Two volumes, novellae by Rabbi Moshe Ber Shehn, Av Beit Din of the Vieden community, and disciple of the Ktav Sofer and Mahar"i Assad. Late 19th century.

The manuscripts include many hundreds of pages densely written in Ashkenazic script, comprising novellae on halachah, Talmudic topics, and drush. The manuscript is integrated with compilations from the works of the Later Authorities (such as Chok Ya'akov, Pri Chadash, Hagahot R"B Frankel and others) as well as articles from the Zohar. At the beginning of the manuscript, there is a colophon written in the author's hand: "With Hash-m's help and great assistance, I will start to write Torah novellae with Tractate Beitzah; I started writing on the eve of Wednesday 15 ... Rosh Chodesh Iyar, 1875, here in Vienna."

The gaon Rabbi Moshe Ber Shehn was a native of Schassburg. He was one of the foremost disciples of the author of Ktav Sofer and of the Mahar"i Assad. He was a rabbi and a halachic decisor in Krems in the Vienna district and then in the Vieden community of Vienna. His teacher, the Ktav Sofer, wrote of him: "Our disciple, the expert rabbi is a morag charutz [מורג חרוץ/an industrious thresher]." And his teacher, the Mahar"i Assad, wrote of him: "My beloved disciple, expert in Torah and pure reverence and spectacular wisdom." There are dozens of responsa addressed to him in Shu"t Mahar"i Assad in which he adorns him with exalted descriptions: "My beloved close disciple, " "Righteous and lofty, " "The great rabbi" and others.
