“Saint Anne and the Virgin Mary as a Child, or the Education of the Virgin Mary”. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Colonial School. 18th century.
Saint Anne holds the child Mary in her arms and both hold a book as a symbol of the Virgin Mary’s education. The ornamentation on the clothing is outstanding, especially on Saint Anne’s cloak, which employs estofado technique and is adorned with large flowers.
