17th Century Seville School - Appearance of the Child Jesus to Saint Anthony of Padua
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 209 x 160 cm. The painting depicts the appearance of the Child Jesus to Saint Anthony of Padua, surrounded by cherubs among clouds. The kneeling Franciscan friar looks devoutly at the Child who descends from heaven. This representation reflects the religious fervour characteristic of the Spanish Golden Age, where devotion and the miracles of the saints were recurring themes in sacred art. The attention to detail in the habit and the serene expression of the saint are typical of the Sevillian style of the period.
