Circle of Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, 1577 - Antwerp, 1640) - Christ's Journey to Calvary
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 80 x 53 cm. Christ on his way to Calvary, surrounded by soldiers and followers, is the protagonist of this dynamic and emotional scene. The vibrant colours and detailed treatment of the figures reflect the influence of the circle of Rubens, one of the most influential painters of the Flemish Baroque. The work is imbued with the drama and theatricality typical of religious scenes of the Counter-Reformation, designed to move the viewer and strengthen faith.
