Vosmaer, Schouman - Snakes. 2
This originally hand-colored engraving is from Arnout Vosmaer's Regnum Animale: Natuurkundige Bschryving eener Uitmunde Verzameling van Zeldsaame Gedierten. The work was published in Amsterdam by J. B. Elwe between 1766 and 1804. The engravings, done by Simon Fokke, were after original watercolors by Aert Schouman.

Arnout Vosmaer (1720-1799) was a Dutch Natural History collector and researcher. He served as the conservator of the menagerie of Princess Anna (wife of William IV, Prince of Orange) that was continued by Stadthouder William V (who eventually collected Albertus Seba's famous cabinet).

Aert Schouman or Aart Schouman (1710–1792) was a painter, glass engraver, printmaker, collector, and dealer from the Dutch Republic. He apprenticed to Adriaan van der Burg and Cornelis Greenwood. In 1751 he became regent of the Hague drawing school associated with the Confrerie Pictura of The Hague.

The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There is some waviness to the plate from being bound. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
