This rare, aquatint engraving is from Francisco Goya's Los Proverbios. Colección de diez y ocho láminas inventadas y grabadas al agua fuerte. It is from the third edition of the work published in Madrid in 1891 by Real Academia de Nobles Artes de San Fernando. This was likely Goya's last series of prints. There were only 100 published in this third edition.

Goya created the series of Los Proverbios or Los disparates between 1815 and 1823. The series was never published while Goya was alive due to political oppression. The images depict political issues, Spanish proverbs and sayings, as well as Spanish carnival.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) was an influential Spanish painter. He served as the appointed painter of King Charles IV and Queen Maria-Luisa. His art was influenced by Rembrandt and Velasquez. Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí both named Goya as inspiration for their artistic styles.

The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may be a few minor marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
