Volunteering for the British Army during World War II: During the Second World War, many members of the Yishuv in Palestine volunteered for the British army to participate in the war against Nazi Germany. In the circumstances, the Yishuv saw itself as an active ally of the United Kingdom, and during the war 38,000 Jews volunteered to serve in the British army, the largest number of the total population of the Yishuv at that time, which numbered 431,000.
The attitude of the Yishuv leadership toward serving in the British army was expressed in the words of the Jewish Agency Executive, which was the official representative of the Jews of Eretz Israel: The White Paper of May 1939 severely damaged us. ... The war now being waged against Great Britain is our war, and whatever assistance we may have in our ability to extend to the British Army and the British nation is possible.
