White House Relic from Room Lincoln Signed Emancipation Proclamation. CAG Encapsulated.Wood swatch, .50" x .75". Wood taken from the room where Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in the White House. Encapsulated by CAG, measuring 2.375'' x 3.375''.This swatch of wood was taken from the White House prior to 1912, and was gifted to a Mr. Bates from the staff of General William Joyce Sewell. Today, this room in the White House is known as the Lincoln bedroom. Prior to Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation, this room was known as the "President's Office" since the time Thomas Jefferson was President. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."Accompanied by an additional packet of provenance used to authenticate the relic.
