'Brit Milah Tax' - Interesting Letter from Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook. Jerusalem, Early 20th Century
Interesting letter from the chief rabbi of the Land of Israel, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook, to the administration of a Jerusalem hospital. In his letter, Rabbi Kook attempts to renew the "ritual circumcision tax" that was customary in Jewish communities in the Diaspora. The letter is undated, but was apparently written at the beginning of the 20th century.
The letter does not mention the name of the hospital; it may be discussing the Bikur Cholim hospital in Jerusalem. In his letter, Rabbi Kook requests that the hospital administrators be aware, and adds that he has also told the ritual circumcisors to be aware, that anyone who circumcises his son in Jerusalem will be required to make a donation towards the maintenance of the Talmud Torah in Jerusalem at a sum of half a Palestine pound. For the wealthy, one Palestine pound, and for those with less, at least 4 shillings. (This is referring to the Chareidi Talmud Torah, Etz Chaim.)
Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook [1865-1935] was the first Ashkenazic chief rabbi in the Land of Israel, an adjudicator, Kabbalist and philosopher, and patriarch of National Zionism.
