Sefer Metziat Ezri. Amsterdam, 1727. Extremely Rare Book

Metziat Ezri, Sam Chaim. Words of mussar brought to print by Rabbi Menachem Azariah HaCohen [Hebrew and Yiddish]. Amsterdam, 1727.

Specifications: 24 leaves, 16 cm. Printed in Hebrew and Yiddish in facing columns. The first title page 'Metziat Ezri' is in Hebrew, followed by a partial title page 'Sam Chaim' in Yiddish.

Unique Features: Interesting composition in rhyme, including words of mussar about prayers at the correct time in the synagogue, synagogue management (gabbai and shamash), matters of commerce and encroachment (hasagat gvul) and more.

Background: The author is Avraham Ashkenazi Afitiker of Ludmir, but his name does not appear in the book. It was brought to print by Rabbi Menachem Azariah HaCohen who writes that he found the book at his in-law's, and he added to what was written in it. It is possible that he did not know who the author was.

For more information about the book refer to: C. Shamruk, Yiddish Literature in Poland, Jerusalem 1981, pages 48-52; Y. Elbaum and Chava Turniansky, Mussar Ba'alei Batim, Sefer Sam Chaim by Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi Afitiker of Ludmir, Al Briah V'Al Yetzira B'Machshava HaYehudit - the Joseph Dan Jubilee Book, Tuebingen 2005, Hebrew part, pages 110-142.

Condition: Moderate-fine. Blemishes on the title page. Stains, wear on the edges of some of the leaves. New binding.
