A serious incident occurred in Jerusalem: Ritual slaughterer…head of the 'Va'ad HaShechita'…insulted the honor of Rabbi Shmuel Salant. The community was shocked and the 'Va'ad HaShechita' held a meeting to severely punish….However, Rabbi Shmuel sent strong instructions not to punish him at all! The 'Va'ad' decided not to punish him, but cancelled his membership in the 'Va'ad.
Here are two letters regarding this decision: The first is a draft signed by leading Jerusalem sages and the leaders of the 'Va'ad'. The second letter is the final version that was publicized with the signatures.
