Be'er Sheva. Copy that Belonged to the Steipler. Handwritten Glosses and a Beautiful Drawing (!)

Sefer Be'er Sheva - novellae and additions to Talmudic tractates and responsa by Rabbi Yissachar Ber Eilenberg. Warsaw, 1890. Personal copy of the sacred gaon of the Jewish people Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky, who left his personal mark in it in the form of glosses and also a precise and beautiful drawing in his hand.

Rare early owner's stamp of the Steipler's on the title page, from the period before he ascended to the Land of Israel: "Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky, author of Sha'arei Tevunah." Two-line gloss on page 62b in block script, handwritten by the Steipler, and later on the same page, a reference correction.

It is most interesting to see the back flyleaf where the Steipler drew a precise and very beautiful illustration of the names of the tractates discussed in this sefer surrounded by a border and with a Torah crown atop.  The purpose of this drawing was apparently to relax his mind a bit from the intensity of the Steipler's studies, which was beyond human comprehension.

The Steipler was known to have "good hands" with a natural talent for fine motor skills, as is evident in this precise drawing. Incidentally, his son Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky did not possess this technical talent; he had "two left hands." Bnei Brak elders relate that once the Steipler and his son were walking on the streets of Bnei Brak with a baby stroller when suddenly one of the wheels detached. Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, out of respect for his father, did not want the Steipler to fix the stroller, so he immediately got down on the ground to try to get the wheel back on. Despite his efforts, he was unsuccessful for a long time. His father, the Steipler, stood on the side and smiled away ...
