Important Letter Regarding Reinterring Bones of Righteous People in the Land of Israel, by the Admor Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Horowitz of Strzyżów
Letter written and signed by Admor Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Horowitz of Strzyzow. Dated: Chanuka 1965. The letter was sent to a prominent Admor and it expresses Rabbi Horowitz's opinion opposing the initiative discussed in a number of Chassidic courts to bring the remains of righteous people to be reinterred in the Land of Israel.
The Admor quotes the Admor of Satmar: "Regarding the removal of bones from the destroyed villages, to the Land of Israel - he does not agree to move the remains of any one of our forefathers and rabbis because if you start with one there is no end, and who can decide between their greatness and sacredness. The Admor then discusses a specific instance in which the Admor of Satmar did suggest the transfer of remains of someone who was killed by falling from a plane and was buried very close to non-Jewish graves, because someone buried by coercion is subject to different halachot. In addition, he added that he told the Admor about the initiative to bring the bones of his grandfather the Admor of Kashoi and he opposed it, saying that those who want to move the bones of righteous people who passed away recently to the Land of Israel are doing it for their own benefit by moving the bones to where they now live. He concludes: "Therefore I have explained why I am not at all involved in moving the bones of my fathers ..." and then goes on to explain why he is trying specifically to move the bones of his son to the Land of Israel.
Admor Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Horowitz of Strzyzow passed away in 1969. He was the son of Admor Rabbi Ahron of Biecz, a scion of the Admor of Sanz, he was raised by his grandfather who served as Av Beit Din in Biecz and the Sassov community. He authored the Darchei Noam on the Torah and holidays. He was buried in the Chelkat HaRabbanim on Har HaMenuchot.
