Psak Beit Din from the Admo"r Rabbi Chaim Elazar of Munkacs. Hebrew and Hungarian. Especially Rare

Ruling regarding the controversy between Rabbi Yosef Elimelech Kahane and Rabbi Yehoshua Greenwald over the rabbinate in Ungvar, from the Admo"r Rabbi Chaim Elazar of Munkacs and his beit din. 1931.

The name of the Admo"r, the author of Minchat Elazar, appears at the top of the leaf, "Chaim Elazar Shapira av beit din k"k Munkacs and environs." Signatories on the ruling: the Admo"r of Munkacs, Rabbi David Schlissel and Rabbi Meir Ze'ev HaKohen Seltzer.

This ruling constitutes the conclusion of the painful episode that divided the Ungvar community. Many Hungarian rabbis became involved - unsuccessfully - and this document here ended the harsh dispute.

This difficult affair was between Rabbi Yehoshua Greenwald, who wanted to succeed his father in the rabbinate, and Rabbi Yehoshua Yosef Elimelech Kahana, who won the election and had the support of community leaders. A summary of the ruling is that Rabbi Yosef Elimelech Kahana is rabbi of Ungvar in every way, and no one may override him in any way ... alongside this, Rabbi Greenwald was granted some smaller roles.

The ruling is written quite sharply: "We warn that according to the sacred Torah that this not occur among the Jewish people, causing divisions, disputes and fights ... and if there is a group in the city that causes division, know that their slaughter will be considered unkosher, treif, and their instruction will be forbidden according to the sacred Torah."

This lengthy and vowelized psak din also appears here in Hungarian! The Hungarian part is completely unknown.

For more about this episode, refer to the extensive discussion in Yahadut Ungvar - Uzhhorod by Dr. Yehudah Spiegel pp. 128-157- but he was unaware of the Hungarian part.

[4] pp, 2 in Hebrew and 2 in Hungarian. 33 cm.

Moderate condition. Tears in the fold with slight damage to the text.
