Important Letter of Responsa [4 Pages] from the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv to Rabbi Chanoch Karelenstein. Unprinted

Rare letter of responsa in both its length and its beauty, entirely [over 1000 words] handwritten and signed on stationery embossed with the gadol hador's name, the gaon Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Jerusalem, 1987?

To the best of our examination in the major databases, we have not found that this letter has ever been printed.

The letter is addressed to the wondrous gaon Rabbi Chanoch Henich Karelenstein [son of the Garda"tz Karelenstein, author of Ma'agelei Tzeddek]. He was a wondrous gaon who passed away at a young age. It is sufficient to see the titles Rabbi Elyashiv uses to describe him while yet a young avreich, or the lengthy halachic responsum that certainly stole a significant amount of Rabbi Elyashiv's time, as he himself notes at the beginning of the letter, "I received your letter right away. Although I am not at all available, I forced myself to find an opportunity to answer you."

Unlike many gedolei Yisrael who published their chiddushei Torah in sefarim, along with their halachic responsa, Rabbi Elyashiv did not publish any sefarim in his lifetime, yet all the generations' issues were determined by his word. Hence the great importance of his halachic manuscripts, to preserve some of the Torah of this greatest of giants.

Lengthy and most important letter of responsa in which the gaon Rabbi Elyashiv writes four clear halachic responsa. The letter is especially clear due to the fact that it was written to a specific addressee, and not like much of his writing which is written in brief for his personal use only, as preparation for shiurim, etc.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and the addressee, the gaon Rabbi Chanoch Henich Karelenstein.

[4] pp, 24 cm. Rabbi Elyashiv's stationery. Entirely handwritten.
